[00:10:40 - 00:10:44] okay incredible slap to five star rating on that bad boy you have both given it I know I'm the

[00:10:54 - 00:11:00] this movie are yeah so I feel like a lot of the time people really like to hit on that that idea
[00:11:00 - 00:11:05] that he's like a wild animal and he loses that part of himself yeah which is kind of when that
[00:11:05 - 00:11:09] that scene with the wolf towards the end yes kind of that idea of like he's kind of like
[00:11:10 - 00:11:17] reestablishing himself as a wild animal within the constraints or constructs of like humanity
[00:11:17 - 00:11:22] that he now lives in I don't love that it's not my favorite I'm like I get it it's cool
[00:11:22 - 00:11:26] Wes Anderson said it's the reason he made this film I think that there are a lot of other
[00:11:26 - 00:11:32] themes that stick out to me but firstly I would say that this movie is like perfect because at
[00:11:32 - 00:11:37] any age and every age I've watched I've seen this movie probably 20 times over the last 10 years
[00:11:38 - 00:11:42] and every time I watch it I connect with a different character yeah okay I connect with a
[00:11:42 - 00:11:48] different character for a different reason too so on my most recent watch Fantastic Mr Fox the
[00:11:48 - 00:11:52] main character right I really noticed that he was struggling with contentment yeah and maybe did
[00:11:52 - 00:11:58] you pick up on that oh yeah 100% 100% recently struggling with contentment and so that was

[00:11:58 - 00:12:03] like so easy to connect with yeah 100% I think what hit me the most if I was just going to go
[00:12:03 - 00:12:10] across and list themes I think a lot of it was connectivity and like I think this movie is about
[00:12:10 - 00:12:16] connecting with a lot of things but like reconnecting with your wife um and like then there's the
[00:12:16 - 00:12:20] other thing which is like the other thing that stuck out to me was midlife crisis and I think
[00:12:20 - 00:12:25] that's maybe I'm projecting onto this movie I'm not in midlife crisis but like
[00:12:25 - 00:12:30] you could see how this podcast was a midlife crisis for us it was not I hope it's not midlife
[00:12:30 - 00:12:37] because we're young but um I think that his what he's going through is what I've seen other people
[00:12:37 - 00:12:42] go through yeah midlife crises of like I want to be my own person again and like I don't like this

[00:12:42 - 00:12:47] rut I'm in yeah yeah yeah I think it's good I think what stuck out to me the most is the
[00:12:47 - 00:12:54] father son dynamic of yeah what is his name what's the son's ash ash yes ash and Christopherson
[00:12:55 - 00:13:01] um their dynamic I thought was great yep again it's very relatable for a kid to be like oh yeah
[00:13:01 - 00:13:08] I've been jealous of another kid before yeah and I've been bullied um but then just the dynamic of
[00:13:09 - 00:13:16] fantasy mr fox and ash is very relatable to in my life and like yeah it was just very
[00:13:18 - 00:13:24] his arc is so good fantasy mr fox in the sense of like youth you can instantly relate to his
[00:13:24 - 00:13:30] midlife crisis but also as a third party perspective be like you're being a selfish jerk here
[00:13:30 - 00:13:35] and not putting your wife and your kid before yourself but also you understand yeah and that's
[00:13:35 - 00:13:44] hard to do to make a someone's moral actions that are immoral sympathetic yes would completely agree

Ethan Johnston:
[00:13:44 - 00:13:50] and I think like the motives are really well articulated not not necessarily like being like
[00:13:50 - 00:13:55] very forward with it but like the actions of the characters like very specifically relate to
[00:13:55 - 00:13:59] them their motives so example drew you're talking about ash right and I think like his main
[00:13:59 - 00:14:04] motive is like he wants to know that his dad is proud of him yeah and so then his actions of
[00:14:04 - 00:14:12] being like jealous and like of of like the things that his dad can or decides or thinks are like good
[00:14:12 - 00:14:18] qualities he wants a robber mask right yeah yeah 100 he just wants to be an athlete like he wants to be

Grant:
[00:14:18 - 00:14:23] good at stuff and I mean I think everybody to a certain extent at least just watching this podcast
[00:14:23 - 00:14:28] probably has been in a situation growing up where they're like I am not as good as this person
[00:14:28 - 00:14:33] at this thing and I'm jealous of right like I felt that everybody's felt that so you kind of feel

[00:14:33 - 00:14:37] for ash in that situation so and even like the subtle comparison of like when ash is like I want to
[00:14:37 - 00:14:43] be an athlete and then it pans to the trophy case or whatever yeah and oh and most of them basically
[00:14:43 - 00:14:47] was like you're not gonna be your dad your dad was too good yeah I'm like dang that's so that's
[00:14:47 - 00:14:53] so subtle but also like that's hard for a kid yeah for sure yeah and Grant I'm curious for you

[00:14:53 - 00:14:56] and I'm not projecting anything on your marriage but you're recently married I am recently my
[00:14:56 - 00:15:00] marriage is great I'll go ahead and say that before we talk but there's like an emotional
[00:15:00 - 00:15:06] scene between mr. Fox and mrs. Fox oh gosh where he says I think like verbatim something like
[00:15:06 - 00:15:11] I love you but I never should have married you gosh yeah that's a crazy scene and I think obviously

[00:15:11 - 00:15:17] I'm not like relating to that scene but I do know a lot of people who like are in very tense
[00:15:17 - 00:15:24] marriages yeah I mean divorce rates are very high nowadays and so to I thought of a specific
[00:15:24 - 00:15:29] couple older couple in my life I'm like I think of these people when I see that scene I'm like
[00:15:29 - 00:15:34] it's just a hard thing to say and to hear but yeah and like it may be I don't think it's played
[00:15:34 - 00:15:37] for laughs but as a kid you're not going to pick up on that yeah for sure yeah it's the same thing
[00:15:37 - 00:15:41] with the Incredibles like you don't pick up on all the marital tension yeah you just think oh there's
[00:15:41 - 00:15:46] arguing but like no that's marital tension that's something that's a really real thing and so for
[00:15:46 - 00:15:51] her to say that verbatim is like gosh that's what some couples never really say to each other but
[00:15:51 - 00:15:55] they feel that and that just permeates throughout their relationship and they never heal from it
[00:15:55 - 00:16:00] and I actually I think it's like mature and I like that she expresses it yeah I think it is emotional
[00:16:00 - 00:16:04] maturity but then at the end like you kind of have the resolution they're like I'm expecting another
[00:16:04 - 00:16:09] kid which like you know if you're an adult you're like okay so they have fixed some issues here
[00:16:11 - 00:16:15] it's just to put it that way but like they have fixed some issues they have fixed some issues
[00:16:15 - 00:16:18] but like yeah they've reconnected right that ties into that theme that I mentioned like yeah
[00:16:18 - 00:16:23] reconnecting with your wife because she ends up understanding him and he ends up understanding

[00:16:23 - 00:16:28] her in a better way by the end of the movie so oh a little leaf landed on me well you're the lucky one

[00:16:50 - 00:16:56] they briefly mentioned what happened with his dad and like he's obviously going through stuff
[00:16:56 - 00:17:01] but he's not the main character of this movie even though he's really important yeah I don't know what

[00:17:07 - 00:17:13] all I picked up on this watch is like his his existence is to flush out the relationship between
[00:17:13 - 00:17:21] fantastic mr fox and ash and to have ash to give like the the story some leverage for ash to
[00:17:21 - 00:17:26] feel these things he feels yeah what about you why do you why do you bring it up yeah I think like

[00:17:26 - 00:17:32] definitely like what is supporting to the relationship between ash and his father right and
[00:17:32 - 00:17:36] it's like curious the like dynamic between him and his father where they're like like he does want
[00:17:36 - 00:17:39] to be with his father and he's good at a ton of things and so you kind of like almost like
[00:17:39 - 00:17:45] project maybe what ash is going through yeah onto christopherson's relationship with his father
[00:17:45 - 00:17:50] in like how did that pan out because christopherson really doesn't care right mr fox is proud of him

[00:17:50 - 00:17:55] or yeah like he has no care in the world yeah he's just good at stuff and then he gets kind of

[00:17:55 - 00:18:03] thrown into situations because he's good at stuff I'm also crying yeah I'm so sorry but to kind of

[00:18:03 - 00:18:10] like I don't know add on to that I think christopherson within the family that he's now kind of in
[00:18:10 - 00:18:17] is he wants to be accepted like he just wants kind of a home and then ash is mad at him like off the
[00:18:17 - 00:18:24] bat and then he's also kind of being used a little bit by mr fox like yeah like he gets dragged
[00:18:24 - 00:18:28] along on these heists that are going on he's like I guess I'm just good at stuff but like
[00:18:28 - 00:18:34] he's he doesn't really have a lot of like well no I was not gonna say the right thing there I think
[00:18:34 - 00:18:40] he's kind of being used for everything or like abused by ash whereas like yeah he just wants to be
[00:18:40 - 00:18:45] seen maybe as his own person it's my I don't know it's my thoughts on that my take yeah I agree

[00:18:47 - 00:18:53] so your position currently Ethan is it is a perfect movie because it has I mean we've
[00:18:53 - 00:18:58] talked about probably five different themes diversity of themes diversity of themes that are all
[00:18:58 - 00:19:05] very applicable to lots of people and you can watch this movie multiple times pick up on different
[00:19:05 - 00:19:10] things and also the different like we've all literally all said something different yeah that
[00:19:10 - 00:19:16] hit us which is not something I can say for a lot of movies honestly I think on so my line too we

[00:19:16 - 00:19:21] talk a lot and maybe we haven't talked about it as much recently with Star Wars and Spider-Man
[00:19:21 - 00:19:26] being like what we've talked about but we talked about a nugget of truth a lot and like
[00:19:26 - 00:19:30] like what can you take from this movie that's true about life or true about
[00:19:30 - 00:19:36] relationships or beliefs or whatever right this is like an eight count nugget of truth because

[00:20:10 - 00:20:16] that song is interpreted from the book but I think like that song is like really interesting
[00:20:16 - 00:20:21] because I think like the humans in this movie act more like the wild animals than the wild animals

[00:20:28 - 00:20:36] because then I've been on like a studio Ghibli kick recently uh with like humans can be really
[00:20:36 - 00:20:41] harmful to the world into wildlife right right and so I think there's a little subtle message
[00:20:41 - 00:20:48] about that of like humans kind of use wildlife for their own gain or like don't coexist well
[00:20:48 - 00:20:54] yeah is maybe like a minor theme in this movie so that's kind of how I took it but I would like to
[00:20:54 - 00:20:58] talk more about kind of the aspect that you brought to it I don't know what you think uh

[00:21:51 - 00:21:57] kind of the synopsis of all three farmers and a they're all kind of scary and like a
[00:21:57 - 00:22:02] claymation stop motion type of way yeah but also like they're eating donuts with goose liver in them
[00:22:03 - 00:22:10] smoking smoking cigarettes and only drinking cider and like that like very just kind of like
[00:22:12 - 00:22:18] monstrous in a in a in a PG way but still in a in a way well in the movie like accents that too

[00:22:18 - 00:22:23] through certain design aspects of like you know this is a beautiful movie but then when the
[00:22:23 - 00:22:30] humans take over or when you're in their houses and stuff the lighting is super right sterile like
[00:22:30 - 00:22:34] it's not beautiful anymore and even at the end of the movie when they raid the
[00:22:34 - 00:22:39] you know grocery market or whatever which is awesome yeah but they mentioned like this food
[00:22:39 - 00:22:43] is synthetic and not good for you yeah that's true it's like at times humans can destroy all
[00:22:43 - 00:22:48] that is beautiful and good about the world it's like I think the movie does intentionally

[00:22:52 - 00:22:59] that I like love that because I think like I think that West Anderson is trying to trying to

[00:23:21 - 00:23:28] confines of this movie they open with like I'm I'm so good at these things but I'm having a child
[00:23:28 - 00:23:34] now everything needs to change an orient around this thing that we've created and like the
[00:23:34 - 00:23:38] the thing that you create is like I mean I believe like the most beautiful thing that anybody
[00:23:38 - 00:23:44] could create is like more life right yeah and so with it starting like that and then ending
[00:23:45 - 00:23:47] like that it's like you go through this journey of like
[00:23:50 - 00:23:55] what we've created oh this is good what we've created like can still be I mean I don't know
[00:23:55 - 00:23:58] maybe you can help me like kind of articulate what I'm trying to say here but like what we've
[00:23:58 - 00:24:03] created has its own challenges and etc etc and it might be you know like different like they
[00:24:03 - 00:24:09] all always do that for ash it's like different right but it's still beautiful yeah so much so
[00:24:09 - 00:24:14] that by the end of this movie we do it again well and like the journey that we've gone on

[00:24:14 - 00:24:18] from the beginning of this movie to the end it's almost more beautiful by the end of it when it
[00:24:18 - 00:24:22] happens again because you know the journey these characters have been on like yeah yeah when they
[00:24:22 - 00:24:26] have another kid or like they're pregnant again like wow they've reconnected at this
[00:24:26 - 00:24:31] yeah like it's a beautiful journey to creating even more life so yeah one more theme that we

Ethan Johnston:
[00:24:31 - 00:24:36] didn't touch on that I picked up on recently was like just how many differences there are in
[00:24:36 - 00:24:42] like the and they like explicitly do that for example like ash everybody just says he's like
[00:24:43 - 00:24:48] then like ash's like love interest she has like a ton of spots like no other fox has spots
[00:24:48 - 00:24:53] and he's he basically tells her like hey you're like different or like christopherson is like
[00:24:53 - 00:24:57] he knows karate he knows like you know all these different things and he's different in that way
[00:24:57 - 00:25:02] and even fantastic mr fox who has all the things that most of the characters value in this yeah
[00:25:02 - 00:25:08] for his differences he is like pushed aside yes and I think that one thing that I love the most
[00:25:08 - 00:25:12] about this movie is that Wes Anderson is trying to communicate that our differences is part of what

Grant:
[00:25:12 - 00:25:18] gives us intrinsic value yeah yeah I mean we don't all want to be the same person right and so like
[00:25:18 - 00:25:24] I think the movie handles uniqueness and also fitting in it's almost like it says that fitting
[00:25:24 - 00:25:31] in is kind of a social construct at times like because none of the characters really fit in and
[00:25:31 - 00:25:35] there's not like a cool kids group in this movie yeah right like they're all different and like
[00:25:35 - 00:25:41] that's just the thing so I don't know I mean I think ash wants to fit in and be cool but then again
[00:25:41 - 00:25:47] like no one's really cool here yeah so yeah yeah that's an interesting concept for sure I agree

[00:25:47 - 00:25:51] the one person that is maybe the most like or the one character that's maybe like the most
[00:25:51 - 00:25:56] normal or fits into the like constraints of society is I think his name is Wiley the like
[00:25:57 - 00:26:04] the opossum yes he's like a plumber he's like doing all the right things in life even later
[00:26:04 - 00:26:11] they he has like a titanium card and mr fox is like how do you qualify and he's like the most
[00:26:11 - 00:26:18] normal of all of them and he stands out some of the least yeah and I think that's intentional too
[00:26:18 - 00:26:23] of like oh that's really interesting the more the more different you are actually the more you're
[00:26:23 - 00:26:28] gonna stand out like and pointing that out not like so that you become different but so that the
[00:26:28 - 00:26:33] things that you're trying to like stop yourself from being different and like you just are more

[00:26:33 - 00:26:39] like willing to be yourself I don't know wow dang it I'm well I honestly might rewatch this movie
[00:26:39 - 00:26:44] within the I know I know like I talk about this makes me want to watch it again I think
[00:26:45 - 00:26:49] you're just so correct this is like a treasure treasure trove gosh of themes and
[00:26:50 - 00:26:54] truths and and everything yes it makes me want to rewatch it and focus on a different character

[00:27:29 - 00:27:34] I'd rather do something I'm good at and I wanted this for me is West Anderson saying that
[00:27:35 - 00:27:38] stealing is immoral and like he should eat I think it is wrong because it causes so much
[00:27:38 - 00:27:46] consequence yes but also he is he's good at stealing and has giftings to steal yeah because
[00:27:46 - 00:27:51] he's a fox like it's literally in his nature yeah to do this yeah he's created to do this
[00:27:52 - 00:27:56] I don't know there's lots of interesting themes there I feel like well and I think too it's like

[00:28:02 - 00:28:06] yeah and and uprooting your whole family to do this thing you like I mean it's kind of similar
[00:28:06 - 00:28:11] maybe to Mr. Incredible a little bit in the Incredibles yeah Loki like not not that dissimilar
[00:28:11 - 00:28:16] but like are you uprooting your whole life or are you doing it in the correct context

[00:28:21 - 00:28:26] trying to say there or if that's just like a danger of the story yeah yeah yeah yeah but

[00:29:02 - 00:29:06] in different contexts I mean if you're Christopher Nolan ever is like oh he's so creative right he's

[00:29:11 - 00:29:15] holding right no it's great I don't I'm not sure this is alter work whatever your mouth okay but

[00:29:15 - 00:29:19] he makes really good stuff right and if you climb to the top you're going to be respected yeah
[00:29:19 - 00:29:24] but if you are a small at-home artist or you only make short films or you only paint paintings
[00:29:24 - 00:29:30] and you post on Instagram and get 20 likes right and you tell somebody oh I paint stuff
[00:29:30 - 00:29:34] yeah and you don't have over a thousand Instagram followers like right somebody's going to frown on
[00:29:34 - 00:29:39] you like or be like oh that's cool like you're not going to be as respected so it's like
[00:29:40 - 00:29:43] but that doesn't make your gift bad like right if anything you should keep doing it because you
[00:29:43 - 00:29:48] love it and because we are gifted with creativity as humans and that's just one example but that's

[00:29:48 - 00:29:53] what comes to my mind no that's absolutely what I thought of yeah as well maybe maybe to that
[00:29:53 - 00:29:58] like Wes like articulates that through mrs fox meryl Streep's character which she's killer
[00:29:58 - 00:30:03] character when if you hear um we haven't talked on the rat um oh yeah we got a lot of love on the
[00:30:03 - 00:30:07] phone love on the phone he like has this line in there where he's like talking to mr fox is like
[00:30:07 - 00:30:12] talking about his wife before like when she was like yes younger and and he's like you know she
[00:30:12 - 00:30:16] basically is a wild animal yeah she was like going around doing all this kind of stuff and
[00:30:16 - 00:30:20] and maybe in in in some sense of the word expressing her own creativity okay I don't
[00:30:20 - 00:30:25] I don't know if I would venture that far to say that in some sense that's wild but I'm
[00:30:25 - 00:30:31] getting there by saying that like that's redeemed in the movie through her being the best artist
[00:30:31 - 00:30:36] like she's always painting oh right oh my gosh and in the movie they talk about how she's like
[00:30:36 - 00:30:40] I think towards the end she does all the big murals and stuff like that is how they win
[00:30:40 - 00:30:46] is because of her creativity being expressed gosh that's so good oh my gosh dude I think

[00:30:52 - 00:30:56] want to talk about and kind of maybe redeem this aspect of the movie that I'm changing my letterbox

[00:31:03 - 00:31:09] wolf scene differently okay so I thought a lot about midlife crisis just like as a concept I
[00:31:09 - 00:31:15] think is really interesting it's obviously something that really does happen yeah and I think
[00:31:16 - 00:31:21] and maybe this is more my personal belief injected into my thoughts on this movie yeah
[00:31:21 - 00:31:28] like there is a wild adventure within man oh yeah humanity but also I would say within men
[00:31:28 - 00:31:34] that is something that's like I don't even know how to explain it besides like the feeling you get
[00:31:34 - 00:31:42] when you like run out into a sports game or like you know or you run out into battle and like I
[00:31:42 - 00:31:48] think anybody can have this feeling right yeah but I read that of like something that
[00:31:48 - 00:31:53] fantastic mr fox or mr fox is kind of afraid of but then he sees his wolf like it's actually
[00:31:53 - 00:32:00] not that bad to tap into that side of me and maybe this is more a an interpretation of what
[00:32:00 - 00:32:05] is put on screen but that's how I read it a little bit of yeah there's a wild side to man
[00:32:05 - 00:32:11] and it's okay to touch into that maybe that ties into the creativity and other things so thoughts

[00:32:20 - 00:32:26] like I think what you said about mrs fox felicity is great like there's this kind of negative

[00:32:35 - 00:32:42] these guys yeah in the past or allegedly allegedly yes and then she finds the healthy outlet of

[00:32:42 - 00:32:50] painting yes I think mr fox is on the same arc of that but I think he just clocks it at the
[00:32:50 - 00:32:54] he clocks it it's good and that he doesn't need to express his creative adventurous side with
[00:32:54 - 00:32:59] stealing yes at the very end of the movie when he sees the wolf he clocks he's like oh wait
[00:33:00 - 00:33:05] I have to go find my passionate thing that doesn't harm the people I love yeah

Ethan Johnston:
[00:33:07 - 00:33:10] yeah I think I read it maybe even a little bit differently than you guys do just like
[00:33:11 - 00:33:14] through watching it a bunch of times okay I'm a Christian I don't know if you guys knew that
[00:33:15 - 00:33:20] and I think that like it's so the Bible again what I believe says that we were all created
[00:33:20 - 00:33:24] in the image of God right so again I'm projecting humanity onto the to the animals which I think
[00:33:24 - 00:33:30] is what Wes is going for and that wolf is created and is exactly like nothing's changed
[00:33:30 - 00:33:35] from what we can see the wolf is exactly doing what it was like created to do and mr fox through
[00:33:35 - 00:33:42] their society has drifted from who like he was created to be and so I read it as like
[00:33:42 - 00:33:47] mr fox drifted from who he was created to be seeing creation the way that it was
[00:33:47 - 00:33:52] created to be and still is and there's like this thing of like I understand you I respect you
[00:33:52 - 00:33:59] know like that he threw up his fist or whatever of like I understand that like there is like a beauty
[00:33:59 - 00:34:04] in that of like a reverence almost gosh that's a really cool interpretation that is so are you

Drew:
[00:34:04 - 00:34:19] arguing that like the what's the word uh it's like when an animal acts like a human anthropomorphic
[00:34:19 - 00:34:27] anthropomorphic sure yeah uh is is the anthropomorphism I'm using all these words
[00:34:29 - 00:34:39] is that like you I think what I hear you're saying yeah is that Wes is saying that the animals
[00:34:40 - 00:34:45] who are putting on human characteristics yes but they were created to steal and created to
[00:34:46 - 00:34:53] or not steal but they were created to be an animal yes so as they put on humans and get this
[00:34:53 - 00:34:57] titanium car that is a negative that Wes is saying yes yes okay I think I agree with you yeah

[00:34:58 - 00:35:03] and I think like that's the thing about this movie is this is our interpretation or what we take
[00:35:03 - 00:35:09] right yeah people who have different worldviews or I don't think Wes intended for this interpretation
[00:35:09 - 00:35:13] at all but that's what makes this super interesting is like yeah you can watch this movie and have
[00:35:13 - 00:35:19] a completely different interpretation and so yeah I don't know I I'm really fascinated by this movie

[00:35:37 - 00:35:42] this that that one or this one is his best one so I guess it's so good I've seen

[00:35:50 - 00:35:55] and I don't really think any of it comes close and again except for Grand Proofest which I
