[00:00:00] Grant:
No way! This is my number four!
[00:00:00] Drew:
Yeah, no way!
[00:00:01] Grant:
No way!
[00:00:02] Grant:
Yeah, we're tied too!
[00:00:02] Drew:
No freaking way!
[00:00:03] Grant:
That's awesome!
[00:00:04] Drew:
That's hilarious.
[00:00:16] Grant:
Welcome back to Stole My Line, a fireside film podcast. I'm Grant.
[00:00:19] Drew:
And I'm Drew.
[00:00:19] Grant:
Today, we are talking about something completely different. It's not Spider-Man.
[00:00:22] Drew:
Yep.
[00:00:23] Grant:
It's not Star Wars.
[00:00:23] Drew:
Nope.
[00:00:24] Grant:
It's not any new release that is coming out right this second.
[00:00:28] Drew:
True.
[00:00:28] Grant:
We're doing kind of a 2026 finger-on-the-pulse, "how we doing?" episode. By which I mean we're going to break down our top five movies or favorite movies, not like the best, but favorite movies that have come out so far in 2026.
[00:00:39] Drew:
Yep, yep
[00:00:43] Grant:
And then top five we are most looking forward to the rest of 2026 because we're a little more than halfway through 2026 and we're overdo on this episode.
[00:00:48] Drew:
True. I'm doing great, and I'm really excited to talk about this
[00:00:50] Grant:
So, Drew, how are you doing today?
[00:00:41] Drew:
I'm doing great, and I'm really excited to talk about this
[00:00:52] Grant:
Yeah, a bit, first, by the way, a few precursors.
[00:00:54] Drew:
Right. Yeah
[00:00:58] Grant:
This is like for the five that we have already liked that we're talking about that came out this year already. These are our favorite movies or the ones that we like the most. They are not the best movies necessarily. They are not ones that will definitely win Oscars. These are not super niche probably. Maybe one or two of them are, but like these are probably more mainstream and you know what?
[00:01:21] Drew:
Right, that's okay. Are you saying we are the cool film bros?
[00:01:22] Grant:
That's okay. We don't have to be like talking about the super obscure movies to be the cool film bros. Like we can just like cinema.
[00:01:26] Drew:
Are you saying we are the cool film bros?
[00:01:28] Grant:
I like to think we're like in the middle ground of like, hey, we're the everyman, but we also watch the niche stuff
[00:01:38] Drew:
True we do
[00:01:38] Grant:
too and tell you what you should and shouldn't watch.
[00:01:39] Drew:
Nope, this is purely excitement. So if you're excited, we are clearly excited. Yep. Let's do it
[00:01:42] Grant:
And then for stuff that's coming up, like these are our predictions of what's going to win Best Picture. These are, I am excited to have my butt in the seat in the theater or on my couch for a streaming movie maybe. So, we will rank like the top 10 best movies of the year at the end of the year because we did that last year. So we'll do that later. But for right now, let's get this started off. Let's start, I think I want to go up.
[00:02:08] Drew:
Yeah, I agree. I agree. I agree
[00:02:08] Grant:
We go five to one and then we do an honorable mention
[00:02:10] Drew:
Yeah, we do. We're starting with best. Yeah.
[00:02:11] Grant:
right before one. So hit me with your number five. We're starting with favorite movies so far of the year. Okay.
[00:02:22] Drew:
Okay. My number five: Project Hail Mary
[00:02:23] Grant:
I am glad this made your top five.
[00:02:25] Drew:
Yeah, I rewatched it probably like three days ago, had a way better time than the first time, which go watch that episode if you want to hear about the first time I watched it. Um, great, hilarious, Ryan Gosling is incredible. Greig Fraser-
[00:02:38] Grant:
One of his best performances, by the way.
[00:02:40] Drew:
Greig Fraser is absolutely phenomenal, his job cinematography inthat movie's insane, score's phenomenal.
[00:02:42] Grant:
Yep. Score's great. Looks great.
[00:02:46] Drew:
Yeah, I had a great time watching it.
[00:02:48] Grant:
That's awesome. Any other thoughts before I say my number five?
[00:02:50] Drew:
Yeah, I had a great time watching it. Not many yeah, I don't think so
[00:02:53] Grant:
Okay. My number five is Spider-Man Brand New Day.
[00:02:56] Drew:
Wow, I didn't really expect this to make your top five to be honest
[00:02:58] Grant:
This made my top five. You know, I thought about it and I liked a lot of movies that came out this year. But I'm like, Hey, I had a great time at the theater. I really enjoyed this movie from like the superhero. I grew up on the MCU inspired man fan part of me. I'm like, yeah, I had a great time.
[00:03:15] Drew:
Okay, I'm also glad I enjoy watching with you. I'm glad this made your top five, too
[00:03:16] Grant:
I enjoyed watching it with you.
[00:03:17] Drew:
Okay, I'm also glad I enjoy watching with you. I'm glad this made your top five, too
[00:03:18] Grant:
I don't know if it'll make my top five of the year at
[00:03:21] Drew:
It'll definitely make my top ten TBD on top five sure
[00:03:23] Grant:
the end of the year, but I think it's sitting in my top 10. I think it's probably one of the better superhero movies that feels like a comic book, even though it still has some of the maybe conventions of the superhero movie genre in it. Like it's still a good movie stuff.
[00:03:36] Drew:
Yeah, I agree
[00:03:37] Grant:
This is my fifth favorite movie of the year so far.
[00:03:40] Drew:
Okay
[00:03:41] Grant:
Oh, wait.
[00:03:42] Grant:
Here's the other thing we got to say. This is like a small thing. When we say a 2026 release, that means that like it came out wide release on streaming or in a theater this year, but some of these movies, somebody's going to be like, well, this movie premiered at this film festival two years ago.
[00:03:50] Drew:
Right. There was one movie on my list that came out in 2025. Right. I could it be the same movie. All right
[00:03:53] Grant:
We're like, yes, I'm in the same boat. So probably, but yeah, that's our little preface there. All right. I want to hear your number four.
[00:04:10] Drew:
The Sheep Detectives
[00:04:11] Grant:
Hey, this is my number four.
[00:04:12] Drew:
Yeah No way
[00:04:15] Grant:
Yeah, we're tied too!
[00:04:15] Drew:
No freaking way. That's hilarious
[00:04:16] Grant:
That's awesome. Let's free. I freaking love Sheep Detectives.
[00:04:19] Drew:
Great movie. Okay. I've only seen it once.
[00:04:20] Grant:
I've watched it twice since it came out. Great. It's a great time.
[00:04:24] Drew:
So good.
[00:04:25] Grant:
It's I think everything that modern cinema can be and like the CGI to do stuff that couldn't really be done before, but then the storytelling is
[00:04:31] Drew:
Right
[00:04:33] Grant:
great. Like this movie probably has some issues, but like for what it is, it's so good.
[00:04:39] Drew:
Great movie
[00:04:40] Grant:
I think you're like swings for the fences and hits home runs where a movie like this really shouldn't.
[00:04:44] Drew:
Yeah, super emotional. I mean, it's one of those kids movies where it's like built for kids
[00:04:45] Grant:
Yeah.
[00:04:50] Drew:
Has the depth of an adult movie. It was great I mean the emotional couple of emotional punches this movie has are pretty severe I didn't want to watch it with my mom just to watch her cry
[00:05:04] Grant:
Yeah, I've watched it with my wife and she's cried every single time.
[00:05:04] Drew:
Yeah, I feel like any woman in my life would cry. I haven't tested this theory, but right. I think they all would cry
[00:05:07] Grant:
Yes. Knowing the women in your life, they all likely
[00:05:12] Drew:
Yeah
[00:05:12] Grant:
would maybe. Not your sister, Eliza.
[00:05:14] Drew:
Yeah, I was a little thing that yeah, I don't I don't know if she would
[00:05:15] Grant:
I think she's the one who wouldn't, but no, this is a great film. If you haven't seen it, it's on Prime right now. You should definitely watch it.
[00:05:22] Drew:
Great movie.
[00:05:23] Grant:
It's great time. So if you also like Knives Out, it's obviously the murder mystery vibe. So it kind of fits that bill for this year. What's your number three Drew?
[00:05:33] Drew:
Yeah, my number three film is Spider-Man: Brand New Day
[00:05:36] Grant:
Okay. Okay.
[00:05:37] Drew:
Yeah, it's high
[00:05:38] Grant:
I like that.
[00:05:40] Drew:
Higher than probably some film bros are like, "you shouldn't have an MCU movie in your top three." I I
[00:05:45] Grant:
Or top five people are going to say that and you know what? They can say that it's whatever.
[00:05:48] Drew:
Don't care. You can say that you're wrong. That's okay. I love this movie. I've literally seen it three times I think I'm going again tonight
[00:05:56] Grant:
No way.
[00:05:57] Drew:
with my sister
[00:05:58] Grant:
That's crazy. That's awesome though.
[00:05:58] Drew:
so Yeah, I think it's great isn't not everything I wanted from a Spider-Man movie, but it's pretty close
[00:06:06] Grant:
It's it's more than you got in the Homecoming trilogy.
[00:06:09] Drew:
True, had a great time watching this movie.
[00:06:10] Grant:
So yeah.
[00:06:12] Drew:
Phenomenal.
[00:06:13] Grant:
If you want to hear more of your thoughts, we
[00:06:14] Grant:
have two episodes on Brand New Day out now. If you're into Spider-Man, we have a whole Spider-Man marathon on the channel and we Spider-Man hot takes one out already very soon.
[00:06:13] Drew:
Two episodes it's true and two is coming soon.
[00:06:24] Drew:
Yep. Yeah, I am on the edge of my seat. Okay
[00:06:25] Grant:
So yes, that's all she wrote, but you can watch our reviews on that. By the way, thanks for being here. If you're new to the channel, consider subscribing because I don't know. We're small and the stock is rising. So just subscribe now. You can be like, "Oh, I was there when they were a baby channel." Anyway, do you want to hear my number three?
[00:06:39] Drew:
Yeah, I am on the edge of my seat.
[00:06:43] Grant:
My number three is Obsession.
[00:06:44] Drew:
Okay.
[00:06:45] Grant:
Is this my type of movie? No.
[00:06:47] Drew:
No, it's not
[00:06:50] Grant:
But the cultural conversation around this movie
[00:06:51] Drew:
Right
[00:06:52] Grant:
has been so fun to be a part of.
[00:06:53] Drew:
Yeah, 100%.
[00:06:55] Grant:
And have I like quoted it and creeped out my wife a little bit a hundred percent?
[00:06:57] Drew:
What have you been like? No, no
[00:06:59] Grant:
Yeah, I'll be like, I'm going to like wake up in the little night and just stare at you and be like watching you sleep or whatever. She hates it when I quote Obsession.
[00:07:01] Drew:
Which is valid.
[00:07:02] Grant:
By the way, I don't actually I don't actually scare her that much, but she hasn't even seen it.
[00:07:06] Drew:
Oh really?
[00:07:14] Grant:
I just talk about the movie and she's scared of seeing the movie because she knows
[00:07:16] Drew:
That's hilarious. Yeah
[00:07:18] Grant:
it's scary. So I'll watch it with her at some point, but I like this movie a lot. It's super well made. I think it's a great example of what 2026 indie filmmaking can be at its best. The industry is in a wild state right now.
[00:07:24] Drew:
This has been a wild year.
[00:07:27] Grant:
This is literally the, I think, I don't know. It's like the mountaintop of how weird the industry is right now. Like you look at Obsession. You're like, that's why the industry is so crazy right now because it's been
[00:07:30 Drew:
Yeah, that's probably fair. All right.
[00:07:46] Grant:
it's been insane, but this is a great film. You should watch it if you're scared of horror movies probably in broad daylight. Yeah.
[00:07:50] Drew:
My number two is the Odyssey
[00:07:52] Grant:
Yes. Okay.
[00:07:54] Drew:
Yeah, I mean if you have a
[00:07:56] Grant:
I feel good about that.
[00:08:00] Drew:
List and I'm attacking the film bros if you have a list where the Odyssey is not in your top five in the middle of 2026.
[00:08:03] Grant:
Yes.
[00:08:06] Drew:
Are you being serious right like that's just that's very You're performative. I'll say it you're a performative little dude
[00:08:14] Grant:
I there will be performative people that hate our list and like, oh, like you shouldn't
[00:08:16] Drew:
Yeah, I mean the Odyssey is insane the technical nature of it is unbelievable
[00:08:18] Grant:
have Brand New Day or the Odyssey in your top five. I'm like, listen, is the top five theater experience of my life? Probably.
[00:08:31] Drew:
The scores unbelievable performances are unbelievable. Everybody who made this film was firing on all cylinders. Phenomenal.
[00:08:38] Grant:
I think the biggest critiques that I'm okay with are like, uh, maybe some storytelling stuff.
[00:08:38] Drew:
Sure. I'm not saying it's perfect
[00:08:40] Grant:
Yeah.
[00:08:46] Drew:
But top five theater experiences of 2026 movies that I've seen this is definitely top three
[00:08:53] Grant:
Completely agree.
[00:08:53] Drew:
100%
[00:08:54] Grant:
In fact, I agree so much that it is also my number two.
[00:08:56] Drew:
No way
[00:08:57] Grant:
Yeah. We've lined up having a lot of this
[00:08:57] Drew:
Wow, this is what I'm so curious what your number one is. I think I think oh wait, I know what it is
[00:08:58] Grant:
actually. No, I don't want you to think too hard yet. Yeah, you probably do.
[00:09:05] Drew:
It's on my list too. Yeah, okay
[00:09:06] Grant:
Yeah. Do we have like the same list in a
[00:09:07] Drew:
Maybe we do hold on. We'll talk about it in a second, but we do
[00:09:09] Grant:
different order? Okay. This is this will be very interesting actually. Okay. Before we get to our number one favorite movie so far of 2026, we need to talk about honorable mentions. It's time to talk about honorable mentions. I think we both have two. Do you have two?
[00:09:22] Drew:
Yep, we do.
[00:09:23] Grant:
Okay. Tell me your first honorable mention.
[00:09:26] Drew:
I have The Drama
[00:09:38] Grant:
Oh, it's a good film.
[00:09:31] Drew:
Great movie
[00:09:32] Grant:
That should have been an honorable mention for me too, but that's
[00:09:33] Drew:
Yeah
[00:09:35] Grant:
okay that it didn't make my honorable mentions because you mentioned it.
[00:09:37] Drew:
Performances are great in this movie. Robert Pattinson and Zendaya crush it. Super interesting, lots of philosophical concepts explored, I think pretty well. The tension in this movie is crazy. Super uncomfortable.
[00:09:50] Grant:
The humor is super interesting.
[00:09:51] Drew:
Yeah, this movie is very well-made. Okay, this feels like a Bugonia of last year.
[00:09:54] Grant:
I have a prediction, a subtle
[00:09:55] Drew:
Yeah
[00:09:58] Grant:
prediction for this movie that this is actually going to be like an awards season sleeper, but it hits some categories that you're like, wow, I didn't expect The Drama to be this present a little bit. I actually have a prediction of
[00:10:10] Drew:
Okay, we'll get there
[00:10:11] Grant:
a different movie that's going to be like a Bugonia of last year, but we'll we'll get there.
[00:10:15] Drew:
But it's great. Yep
[00:10:16] Grant:
No, I like The Drama a lot. That's a good. It's a good shout. All right. Do you want to hear one of mine?
[00:10:20] Drew:
Yes, I do
[00:10:21] Grant:
I don't think you would have thought that this movie title will come out of my mouth on this episode.
[00:10:21] Drew:
Is this gonna be another Anaconda moment?
[00:10:22] Grant:
No, no, I don't think it's not like that 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.
[00:10:31] Drew:
Okay. Whoa, I didn't expect that at all
[00:10:33] Grant:
Here's the thing. Will I ever rewatch this movie? No.
[00:10:34] Drew:
You don't like horror. This movie was so graphic.
[00:10:38] Grant:
Yeah, I mean, there's a lot of stuff that's not my vibe, but I
[00:10:40] Drew:
Yeah, okay.
[00:10:41] Grant:
I really like- I don't know.
[00:10:43] Grant:
I've thought about this movie a handful of times. The performances are really great. The story is pretty good. Um, I didn't love all the vibes, but there's a good continuation of the first 28 Years Later, which is a continuation of the 28 Weeks and Days series.
[00:10:58] Drew:
Yeah, 28 Weeks and Days. Yeah. Wow, that's crazy. Yeah.
[00:10:59] Grant:
But like for this to be a really strong entry in this franchise, I had a good time weirdly. I just like- I like this movie. Is it my number six movie of the year? Probably not. But when I was looking through all the movies, I watched this year. It's like, I'm going to give this movie a shout. This movie is a quality movie. And it's like kind of weird that no one saw it too. I guess it's just like was more in the niche category, but it's a good movie.
[00:11:21] Drew:
It is good. I mean I-
[00:11:22] Grant:
It is very graphic.
[00:11:24] Drew:
I wouldn't say I love this movie just because it was so bloody and like it's just so violent But yeah, I think it's good
[00:11:32] Grant:
I think there's part of me that really likes like zombie apocalypse movies. Like I'm a- I'm a really big fan of The Last of Us video game series and to a certain extent the TV show, mainly the first season.
[00:11:36] Drew:
Okay, great
[00:11:38] Grant:
And I think that this series has at times good and bad played with like this the apocalypse kind of genre. Well, and I think this movie does a good job of that.
[00:11:52] Drew:
Yeah, I have thought about the Jimmy cult a lot.
[00:11:53] Grant:
So, oh, yeah, it's super interesting.
[00:11:59] Drew:
Super intriguing
[00:11:59] Grant:
I mean, okay, if you look at the cast of that movie, you're
[00:12:00] Drew:
It's stacked. Yeah
[00:12:01] Grant:
like, oh, my gosh, this is like kind of stacked. So I'm a fan of that movie. It was sort of sad. All right. What's your other honorable mention?
[00:12:06] Drew:
Yeah, came Parsons back rooms
[00:12:07] Grant:
It's good. It's a good shout too.
[00:12:11] Drew:
Okay, I thought it's super solid. I think the storytelling is what holds me back from having in my top five I think.
[00:12:18] Grant:
From a filmmaking perspective,
[00:12:19] Drew:
It's incredible production design is unbelievable direction is unbelievable cinematography is great
[00:12:20] Grant:
it's great. Some of the best horror moments in recent memory, lowkey.
[00:12:25] Drew:
Other than another movie. But yeah
[00:12:26] Grant:
Yeah, we'll get there.
[00:12:31] Drew:
Yeah, I agree
[00:12:32] Grant:
Um, okay.
[00:12:33] Drew:
No, it's great movie. I am very excited. Okay. Okay
[00:12:34] Grant:
Any other thoughts on Backrooms? I mean, I had a great time. I'm excited for the future of the Backrooms series. So we'll see where that goes. Here's my other honorable mention. I kind of mean, I have a lot that I want to shout out, but my second one is the Legend of Aang movie. And here's the thing. Is it the best movie? No. But if you're an Avatar: The Last Airbender fan, this is a great experience. Revisiting all these characters. I also had a great time watching this movie with my brother. So I want to give him a shout. Like, I enjoy this movie. I also had to rewatch all of ATLA right before watching the movie. So I don't know. It's more of a recent experience, but if you're an ATLA fan, you should check it out. Take a good movie. I wish it got a wide theater release.
[00:13:13] Drew:
I do too. I enjoyed it too. I thought it was great.
[00:13:15] Grant:
Yeah, I don't even think it's the best animated movie of this year. I think Hoppers is better, but like animated.
[00:13:18] Drew:
Oh, what else come out?
[00:13:20] Grant:
Super Mario Galaxy movie. Not better than that one.
[00:13:23] Drew:
Not that one. That's probably my last slot.
[00:13:27] Grant:
Yeah.
[00:13:27] Drew:
Yeah, I thought it was good
[00:13:28] Grant:
Okay. Okay. And your number one, Drew.
[00:13:29] Drew:
My number one is Obsession.
[00:13:33] Grant:
I knew it. I think we do. We might have the same list.
[00:13:34] Drew:
Yeah, okay
[00:13:36] Grant:
It's just reordered. Okay.
[00:13:38] Drew:
My five is your one and my one is your three. Yeah. Again, Obsession is great. This is like every aspiring director. This is the dream you want to be fricking Curry Barker.
[00:13:52] Grant:
Just like nuke Hollywood with a hit movie that was made on a tight budget.
[00:13:56] Drew:
Right, I mean, it's great, performances are unbelievable, storytelling is great. Super tight scope of story. It works so well. Best horror movie I may have ever seen. I don't know where I am there yet, but it's up there. Yeah.
[00:14:07] Grant:
Okay. I mean, again, it's been a crazy good year for horror, honestly. I mean, Obsession-Backrooms double feature in May was wild. So, yeah, I mean, I don't think
[00:14:19] Drew:
I mean, it's so great
[00:14:22] Grant:
we can say much about Obsession that has not already been said. Besides, Inde Navarrette, please slot her into the Best Supporting Actress category at the Oscars nominations. Don't go for-
[00:14:32] Drew:
Also, Inde Navarrette since you peruse the internet. Come on Stole My Line. Yeah, that'd be awesome.
[00:14:35] Grant:
Please, that'd be great. We'll have you on.
[00:14:37] Drew:
I think she would. I can I guess or do you want to?
[00:14:38] Grant:
We're chill like that. Um, I think best actress, she can make her run, but I just think she would. I think she'd knock it out of the park in Best Supporting. I think she'd win it, honestly. So we'll see how that shapes up. Are you ready for my number one?
[00:14:48] Drew:
I can I guess or do you want to?
[00:14:51] Grant:
I feel like I want to say it.
[00:14:55] Drew:
Okay, say is it?
[00:14:57] Grant:
My number one, and I really debated between a lot of movies and I feel like this list for me can switch around a lot, but it's Project Hail Mary. Um, I feel like the vibes that you get from this movie, like you leave the theater just feeling joyful and happy.
[00:15:04] Drew:
Yeah, yeah, I think that's true
[00:15:05] Grant:
I have a lot. This is probably the movie I laughed the most in this year.
[00:15:14] Drew:
It's funny. Yeah
[00:15:15] Grant:
I'd say the Odyssey is like a better movie on like a technical scale, but like I don't think I've been as invested in a movie and in the characters and like love the movie as much this year as Project Hail Mary. I'm due for rewatch.
[00:15:34] Drew:
Well, I think it's great. Who doesn't? that is wild actually. I don't know
[00:15:35] Grant:
I haven't seen it in a few months, but so far it's my favorite movie of the year. I love me some Ryan Gosling.
[00:15:38] Drew:
Who doesn't? that is wild actually.
[00:15:39] Grant:
Yeah, I think we do have the same list though. Rearranged.
[00:15:41] Drew:
That is wild actually.
[00:15:44] Grant:
Yeah, that's what are the odds of that?
[00:15:48] Drew:
I don't know. We've seen basically all the same 20 movies. I guess I've seen The Invite you haven't, yeah.
[00:15:52] Grant:
Yeah, we have. I think you've seen. Yeah, I haven't seen The Invite yet, but for the most part, yeah,
[00:15:57] Drew:
Yeah, right.
[00:15:58] Grant:
I think that I mean, you mentioned this before we hit record. There's gonna be some people that are like, I can't believe you have four or five of the most watched movies of the year in your top four or five of the year. I'm like, listen, these are quality popular movies. So, yeah.
[00:16:10] Drew:
Popular doesn't mean bad and I mean if we haven't seen everything, but we seen The Death of Robin Hood and I've seen the invite
[00:16:19] Grant:
The Drama.
[00:16:20] Drew:
We've seen The Drama, like all the Indy movies that we have had had access to.
[00:16:22] Grant:
I mean, yeah, yeah.
[00:16:27] Drew:
We have gone out to see
[00:16:28] Grant:
Did you guys go see Two Sleepy People? I think not.
[00:16:30] Drew:
Probably not.
[00:16:31] Grant:
So I would say that like, also the back end of the year are the arts year movies that if you're a
[00:16:36] Drew:
True and
[00:16:37] Grant:
fan of like Oscar season, occurs later in the year. And so we haven't gotten some of these movies that we're about to talk about. We haven't gotten all those artsy movies yet. So we'll see kind of how the rest of the year shapes up and how our top 10 shapes up.
[00:16:50] Drew:
Even if these five movies remain our top five, it's just an opinion.
[00:16:56] Grant:
Yeah.
[00:16:56] Drew:
And that's okay
[00:16:57] Grant:
We want to hear your top fives.
[00:16:58] Drew:
We do yeah comment down below.
[00:16:59] Grant:
By the way, before we get to our most anticipated the rest of the year, I have curveball question number one. Who's the MVP of this year? So far.
[00:17:04] Drew:
Let me see... okay. It has to be Inde Navarrette.
[00:17:08] Grant:
Yeah, I'm going to disagree. It's Robert Pattinson.
[00:17:10] Drew:
Okay. Oh.
[00:17:12] Grant:
Now, this is a little bit of a predictive
[00:17:14] Drew:
That is predictive
[00:17:16] Grant:
pick because like there's still there's two movies left to come out.
[00:17:19] Drew:
Yeah, yeah
[00:17:20] Grant:
But I think this is a generational year for Rob, but also Inde's so great.
[00:17:25] Drew:
Here here's why I instantly off the bat said Inde is because my social media feed right now strictly Inde. I've already now- I would say the second person is
[00:17:34] Grant:
You are incriminating yourself. By the way, this is crazy.
[00:17:36] Drew:
Robert Pattinson he's on there a lot too and Robert Pattinson has a whole lot more runway right now.
[00:17:41] Grant:
I think he does. He does.
[00:17:44] Drew:
Yeah, yeah
[00:17:45] Grant:
I think Rob, he does occupy a little bit more of my social media feed than Inde does. But I think like we'll look back on 2026-2027, that stretch for Rob and be like, "that was a really good stretch."
[00:17:58] Drew:
Insane years.
[00:17:59] Grant:
If we're talking about one person who does heavy lifting on a movie, Inde totally wins.
[00:18:03] Drew:
100%
[00:18:04] Grant:
But I'm talking like four or five films that Rob is like really great performances.
[00:18:04] Drew:
No, I think your prediction is going to be a correct one.
[00:18:06] Grant:
So I don't know. Okay, we'll see. I don't know. Let us know what you think or if there's a different MVP that we haven't mentioned. Is it Tom Holland? Probably not.
[00:18:14] Drew:
We'll see it could be though. He I've watched so many interviews
[00:18:18] Grant:
He did a lot of great work on Brand New Day. Honestly, we're talking about actors too. There's like MVP director.
[00:18:23] Drew:
Curry Barker.
[00:18:25] Grant:
You say, so not you're not saying Chris Nolan here. That's interesting.
[00:18:35] Drew:
Okay, but are we talking like how are we defining this? Are we talking cultural space occupancy?
[00:18:42] Grant:
No, literally every factor like filmmaking.
[00:18:44] Drew:
Okay, well, then probably Nolan.
[00:18:47] Grant:
But here's the thing, like with what he's given, Curry Barker made maybe a better movie than Nolan could have made on that same budget. Well, maybe not. Memento is great.
[00:18:56] Drew:
I don't think so Memento exists. And The Prestige.
[00:18:57] Grant:
Memento is great. I don't know. I think Obsession could occupy a similar space as Memento in like the indie film culture. It really good. At time will tell.
[00:19:03] Drew:
I don't hate it. I don't hate it. That would be crazy
[00:19:05] Grant:
We'll see. I'm not saying that Curry Barker is better than Chris Nolan. Don't hear me saying that. It would be crazy, but we'll see.
[00:19:12] Drew:
Yeah.
[00:19:13] Grant:
Let's know your thoughts on that. We have hot takes here. If you disagree, that's fine.
[00:19:15] Drew:
All right, should we get into most anticipated movies of 2026?
[00:19:19] Grant:
All right. Most- yeah. Let's do it.
[00:19:21] Drew:
Back half of the year. Starting off strong with my number five
[00:19:26] Grant:
Go for it.
[00:19:26] Drew:
Clayface
[00:19:27] Grant:
Okay. I almost put this in my top five.
[00:19:28] Drew:
Yeah, okay. I think the trailers so far look phenomenal. I'm super anticipatory. I think James Gunn is doing something really weird with the DC you don't know how you feel about it
[00:19:39] Grant:
Yep.
[00:19:41] Drew:
But I think this movie in particular looks awesome. Is it Matt Hagan? I think he's playing him.
[00:19:46] Grant:
Sure.
[00:19:47] Drew:
I think he is a great choice. I love what he's doing in the trailer. Super excited
[00:19:51] Grant:
I'm interested in this movie. It's going to be a great time. We'll see.
[00:19:55] Drew:
Okay.
[00:19:56] Grant:
My number five slot. This is like- I've got to preface.. This is a guilty pleasure pick, but I have reasoning. It is The Hunger Games: Sunrise-
[00:19:59] Drew:
I knew this was going to be your top five! Yes. I knew it. I knew it.
[00:20:03] Grant:
No way. Okay. No way. All right. I really almost didn't even put this in my top five. I almost put this is an honorable mention, but I don't care.
[00:20:12] Drew:
Yeah, it's our list. We can do whatever we want
[00:20:13] Grant:
Sunrise on the Reaping. So here's the thing.
[00:20:14] Drew:
Okay.
[00:20:15] Grant:
Is Hunger Games like insanely good? No. Will this be on my top 10 of the year? Probably not.
[00:20:22] Drew:.
It probably will
[00:20:24] Grant:
No, there's no way.
[00:20:25] Drew:
You had Anaconda and Sketch in your top five last year- or top 10! Top 10, Top 10.
[00:20:27] Grant:
I did not. Anaconda did not- no, Anaconda didn't even make my top 10.
[00:20:30] Drew:
Oh, you're right. It was an honorable mention
[00:20:30] Grant:
It was the honorable mention. Sketch was good. You're hating. Okay.
[00:20:35] Drew:
Okay, continue.
[00:20:37] Grant:
Here's the thing. Hunger Games is the best by far at what it does of occupying that space.
[00:20:40] Drew:
100 percent. Yep.
[00:20:41] Grant:
It's all star cast. The movies are good for what they do. Are they like that great?
[00:20:45] Drew:
I agree. Yeah, that's true
[00:20:47] Grant:
No, but like I love them. Are they cheesy at times? Totally. But like the cast are great. The cast of this movie is insane. I think it could be very good. We'll see.
[00:20:58] Drew:.
Yeah
[00:20:59] Grant:
I'm excited. That's all I'm saying.
[00:21:00] Drew:
Yeah.
[00:21:01] Grant:
What was your number four?
[00:21:02] Drew:
My number four is Fjord.
[00:21:04] Grant:
Okay.
[00:21:05] Drew:
We got Renate Reinsve, but we got Sebastian Stan.
[00:21:08] Grant:
Won the Palme.
[00:21:09] Drew:
both all-star leading actresses and actors
[00:21:12] Grant:
Sebastian has been taking some swings. He's going for the Oscar right now.
[00:21:15] Drew:
He is going for it and I'm here for it. Um Give me a foreign film with Renate Reinsve. I'm never gonna say no. I'm all-
[00:21:22] Grant:
You're like a recent Renate Reinsve stan.
[00:21:24] Drew:
I -I'm a convert. Yep
[00:21:25] Grant:
Let's go. We haven't even seen Worst Person in the World yet.
[00:21:28] Drew:
No, I haven't seen it yet
[00:21:29] Grant:
We got to get around to that one. Yeah, it was.
[00:21:31] Drew:
Sentimental Value is so good.
[00:21:33] Grant:
I think this movie, I don't know much about what it's actually about.
[00:21:36] Drew:
And that's why it's low on my list because I have no idea what the story is.
[00:21:38] Grant:
But like it won the Palme, it will probably be a huge awards player.
[00:21:41] Drew:
Yeah, I agree
[00:21:42] Grant:
So I almost put that on my top five, too, just because like I think it's going to occupy a cool space in 2026. We'll see.
[00:21:49] Drew:
Yeah, okay
[00:21:50] Grant:
Yeah, love the thoughts there. My number four, this is also a little bit of like, I don't know, I have a personal attachment a little bit to this film, even though it hasn't come out. It's I Play Rocky. And so, and this is my personal opinion. I don't love remakes. I don't love like milking your franchise for all it's worth, but the story-
[00:22:09] Drew:
Which the Rocky franchise has kind of done.
[00:22:11] Grant:
Oh, yeah, 100%. And I like the Creed movies.
[00:22:13] Drew:
Right.
[00:22:15] Grant:
I Play Rocky is an interesting concept because the story of how they made Rocky is super interesting.
[00:22:19] Drew:
Yeah
[00:22:20] Grant:
Like, I don't think it's going to be that like incredible. Maybe it will be. But the trailer looks pretty good.
[00:22:25] Drew:
Yeah.
[00:22:26] Grant:
I'm excited for this movie.
[00:22:28] Drew:
I agree.
[00:22:28] Grant:
This is like what I'm excited to go see. So I grew up on Rocky like-
[00:22:30] Drew:
Yep
[00:22:33] Grant:
my dad and I watched Rocky IV all the time growing up. So from that perspective, I'm excited to watch I Play Rock. So that's my number four.
[00:22:40] Drew:
I think it's great
[00:22:42] Grant:
What's your number three?
[00:22:42] Drew:
My number three is Behemoth.
[00:22:45] Grant:
Oh, okay.
[00:22:47] Drew:
With Pedro Pascal, Olivia Wilde, but more importantly written and directed by Tony Gilroy Who created Andor and wrote Andor.
[00:22:53] Grant:
Yeah, that's a good pull.
[00:22:56] Drew:
Who is- which is one of my favorite shows of all time?
[00:22:59] Grant:
I forgot this movie's coming out.
[00:23:00] Drew:
And I'm super hyped for this. I think Tony Gilroy
[00:23:00] Grant:
Yeah.
[00:23:04] Drew:
is one of the strongest writers working in Hollywood right now If I'm super excited to see what he does here.
[00:23:10] Grant:
I think here's the thing about Pedro people forget that he's a killer actor. I think people see his face and are like "I'm sick of Pedro Pascal." That's totally fair.
[00:23:13] Drew:
Yeah, which by the way, he hasn't been in a ton of movies this year.
[00:23:15] Grant:
I guess he did Mando in Fantastic Four was last year. If you watch The Last of Us, for example, or I mean, you could list a ton of older Pedro stuff. He's great. He's a killer actor.
[00:23:33] Drew:
Every time I wanted to hate a Pedro Pascal performance just because I'm like, "oh, it's Pedro Pascal," I've been like, "you know what that's pretty good performance." He's great/
[00:23:41] Grant:
I mean, I did not like The Last of Us season tw0. The scene when he's on the porch with Ellie. He is so good. Like it's honestly frustrating how good he is at times because you want to hate him a little bit, but like he's he's great. I'm excited to see this movie. I forgot this was coming out.
[00:23:56] Drew:
Yep.
[00:23:56] Grant:
It's a good pull. Okay.
[00:23:57] Drew:
Okay.
[00:23:58] Grant:
All right. My number three is Digger
[00:24:00] Drew:
Okay.
[00:24:01] Grant:
with Tom Cruise. I used to know how to pronounce the director's name. I can't off the dome.
[00:24:08] Drew:
Birdman
[00:24:10] Grant:
Revenant.
[00:24:10] Drew:
Uh, Revenant
[00:24:11] Grant:
Yeah, I'm not going to try because I'm going to butcher it, "Iñ..."
[00:24:13] Drew:
Alejandro Iñárritu.
[00:24:16] Grant:
"arr-" okay. And we're done. I'm excited for it.
[00:24:18] Drew:
We are white.
[00:24:20] Grant:
I almost just like the persona and moxie that the movie has before it even comes out. Like the fact that it was
[00:24:26] Drew:
Yeah
[00:24:27] Grant:
promoted just with the Tom Cruise highlight reel is so
[00:24:29] Drew:
Yeah, so insane.
[00:24:30] Grant:
ridiculous that I want to see it. Is Tom Cruise going to win
[00:24:31] Drew:
Yeah.
[00:24:34] Grant:
Best Actor? Maybe like, I don't know. Is this a generational Tom Cruise performance that's like career defining? It might be. We haven't seen him do a not action movie thing in a while.
[00:24:45] Drew:
True.
[00:24:45] Grant:
So I'm excited for this.
[00:24:47] Drew:
Yep.
[00:24:48] Grant:
We'll see if it's good. It was shot on 35 millimeter. The trailer looks like it was not shot on 35 millimeter.
[00:24:53] Drew:
That's- and that's something that's intriguing is the trailer looks from a visual perspective, not great.
[00:24:59] Grant:
But like, I think the movie is going to be super interesting because, like the director-
[00:25:02] Drew:
I think it will...
[00:25:06] Grant:
whose name I'm really still not going to try to pronounce (Iñárritu) even though I want to- like he's killer. So we'll see. I'm just intrigued by this
[00:25:12] Drew:
Yeah
[00:25:12] Grant:
movie more than anything.
[00:25:13] Drew:
This movie is super intriguing
[00:25:15] Grant:
Okay. You're up.
[00:25:16] Drew:
Yeah, number two, The Social Reckoning. Super intrigued, Aaron Sorkin is writing and directing.
[00:25:23] Grant:
Mm hmm.
[00:25:25] Drew:
Which might be a yikes. We don't know. Jeremy Allen White's here. Mark Strong is killing it in the trailer.
[00:25:33] Grant:
Mikey Madison's in this movie.
[00:25:34] Drew:
Mikey Madison's in the movie
[00:25:35] Grant:
Oscar winning actress, which is a thing we say.
[00:25:37] Drew:
true Yeah, that's true. Uh, yeah, I mean, The Social Network one of my favorite movies of all time. We now have a sequel. Is it good? Is it bad? I'm intrigued. I'm intrigued.
[00:25:49] Grant:
"Intrigued, intrigued" is a great word here.
[00:25:51] Drew:
Yep.
[00:25:51] Grant:
Okay. Okay.
[00:25:52] Drew:
Yep All right, Grant. What is your number two?
[00:25:55] Grant:
My number two is Primetime with
[00:25:57] Drew:
Okay
[00:25:58] Grant:
Robert Pattinson. It's a recent like excitement for this film.
[00:26:02] Drew:
The trailer looks insane.
[00:26:03] Grant:
It does. It's an A24. Robert Pattinson.
[00:26:04] Drew:
Yep.
[00:26:06] Grant:
as Chris Hansen. I've done like a deep dive on
[00:26:07] Drew:
Yep.
[00:26:08] Grant:
Chris Hansen recently and To Catch A Predator. Merritt Wever who's great in everything. I'm just excited for this movie. It's really interesting made by a documentary filmmaker. A24 gets weird. So this is probably going to get weird at times. But Robert Pattinson has been picking really well recently.
[00:26:25] Drew:
He has.
[00:26:26] Grant:
He's been making great selections. So I'd be surprised if this
[00:26:27] Drew:
Yep.
[00:26:29] Grant:
was bad. But maybe it could be. I don't know.
[00:26:31] Drew:
It's going to- it's guaranteed to be interesting.
[00:26:34] Grant:
Yeah, yeah. I think that's why I'm excited.
[00:26:35] Drew:
Yeah.
[00:26:36] Grant:
Like the same reason why you love a true crime podcast. Is it because it's like is it beneficial for your life?
[00:26:36] Drew:
How do we- no.
[00:26:37] Grant:
Maybe not. But like you can't look away
[00:26:43] Drew:
Yeah
[00:26:44] Grant:
and that's- or listen away. I guess if you're listening to a true crime podcast and you know, that's how I feel about this movie. So I'm excited.
[00:26:50] Drew:
Yeah I'm also excited
[00:26:52] Grant:
What's your honorable mention?
[00:26:53] Drew:
All right, my first honorable mention- And this is going to shock the world.
[00:26:55] Grant:
Yeah.
[00:26:57] Drew:
Is Dune 3
[00:27:00] Grant:
That doesn't even make your top five. Wow.
[00:27:00] Drew:
Well, I haven't seen Dune 2.
[00:27:03] Grant:
Okay, that's a tragedy. But okay.
[00:27:04] Drew:
I know and like audience, it will be rectified.
[00:27:04] Grant:
It will be this December.
[00:27:07] Drew:
Okay, I'm going to fix this I just haven't gotten around to it. And I mean the trailer looks absolutely unbelievable.
[00:27:15] Grant:
Yes.
[00:27:16] Drew:
So I'm super excited I just don't have a lot of context to be excited about.
[00:27:20] Grant:
That's fair.
[00:27:21] Drew:
so I'm just I- I feel like I'm like in an aquarium and Dune's happening in there, but I'm like behind the glass, and like people are inviting me to come and swim around but like, I'm like "I can't, yeah, I can't guys, I can't."
[00:27:35] Grant:
That's that's a very interesting analogy. I love it. Okay. You want to hear my first honorable mention?
[00:27:40] Drew:
Yes, I do
[00:27:40] Grant:
This is one that we have never talked about in the podcast, but it's The Whisper Man starring Adam Scott. It's coming out on Netflix in August. I'm very excited for it.
[00:27:50] Drew:
Okay, I don't know nothing about this movie
[00:27:50] Grant:
It's like a thriller. Yeah, it's I'm excited for this movie.
[00:27:53] Drew:
Okay.
[00:27:55] Grant:
That's the thing about Netflix releases is like you hear about it and you're like, "that looks cool." But then you're like, "I don't even know if I'm going to watch that there, will be any cultural conversation around it?" That's just kind of how on Netflix releases go unless they blow up. And so I'm excited for this movie. I love Adam Scott.
[00:28:09] Drew:
Yep.
[00:28:10] Grant:
We'll see how it goes. Honorable mention two for you?
[00:28:13] Drew:
All right. How to Rob a Bank.
[00:28:16] Grant:
Okay.
[00:28:16] Drew:
And here's the thing. There is an 85% chance this movie is terrible. But there's a 15% chance it's not. Because the trailer looks super intriguing.
[00:28:27] Grant:
It does.
[00:28:27] Drew:
It's also done by the same guy who did like Deadpool 2 So I'm like, "is this going to be a raunchy crime comedy?"
[00:28:34] Grant:
Probably.
[00:28:34] Drew:
There's a strong chance. Is that really what I want from this movie? No. But there's a 15% chance where it's like super in deep on the internet and how culture moves and all that. Which would be super interesting. Will it be? I don't know, probably not. But I'm hopeful.
[00:28:48] Grant:
That's why it's the honorable mention list.
[00:28:50] Drew:
Right
[00:28:50] Grant:
Okay.
[00:28:52] Drew:
Yeah
[00:28:52] Grant:
I like it. Mine is The Debut with Paul Giamatti.
[00:28:55] Drew:
Hey.
[00:28:56] Grant:
And the reason behind this is like I love Paul Giamatti specifically The Holdovers. I think he was snubbed.
[00:29:04] Drew:
You want, you- you don't love TASM 2...?
[00:29:07] Grant:
His performance as Rhino in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is not his best.
[00:29:11] Drew:
Oh.
[00:29:12] Grant:
Why does he have that accent? Who knows? But I think he's great. And I would love to see him get even more love in the film critics circle, which I know he has a lot of respect and love there. But like let's see him win an Oscar. So we'll see how this goes.
[00:29:29] Drew:
Jesse Eisenberg has kind of been on like a- He wrote A Real Pain? Did he write that?
[00:29:33] Grant:
I think he I think he did or at least he directed?
[00:29:34] Drew:
I don't know, he was he was in it but also involved.
[00:29:36] Grant:
I haven't seen A Real Pain
[00:29:40] Drew:
He's just kind of been on like a more writer-director kick recently.
[00:29:43] Grant:
Which I like for him.
[00:29:43] Drew:
I like it.
[00:29:43] Grant:
I think that's an interesting career move.
[00:29:44] Drew:
I think it's great, yeah.
[00:29:46] Grant:
I'm a fan.
[00:29:46] Drew:
I'm also a fan
[00:29:48] Grant:
Okay.
[00:29:49] Drew:
All right
[00:29:49] Grant:
Anything else you want to say before we get to our number ones?
[00:29:51] Drew:
I saw that trailer. I was super intrigued and it hasn't made my list. But I am more intrigued.
[00:29:57] Grant:
Yeah. There's a lot of other movies we could have mentioned here, like.
[00:30:01] Drew:
Yeah, when I went through IMDb I had like 16 that I was excited for.
[00:30:05] Grant:
Okay. All right. Number one.
[00:30:08] Drew:
Primetime.
[00:30:09] Grant:
Okay.
[00:30:10] Drew:
And this is completely a recency bias I saw the trailer like two days ago. So intriguing the-
[00:30:15] Grant:
You let me talk about it all and like you didn't say a word.
[00:30:17] Drew:
Well, I-
[00:30:17] Grant:
You didn't you didn't let on at all that this is your number one.
[00:30:19] Drew:
I know.
[00:30:20] Grant:
That's awesome.
[00:30:21] Drew:
I think editing of the trailer is sick.
[00:30:22] Grant:
It is, the visuals-
[00:30:23] Drew:
The vibe of the trailer is awesome. Yeah, super intriguing
[00:30:27] Grant:
Yeah. This is like right up your alley.
[00:30:29] Drew:
It is. It is.
[00:30:29] Grant:
I feel like this is a little bit of Safdie vibes here too.
[00:30:32] Drew:
Yep. Great.
[00:30:33] Grant:
Yeah. It's gonna be great. Yeah. I mean we kind of already talk about it but if you're excited for Primetime, let us know. Hit that subscribe button. You want to hear my number one?
[00:30:42] Drew:
I do, I have a guess I think.
[00:30:44] Grant:
My number one is Dune: Part 3.
[00:30:45] Drew:
Yeah
[00:30:46] Grant:
and I think like I'm not the biggest Dune fan by the way. I like the first two Dune movies. What I think this movie could be if it's firing on all cylinders is potentially sleeper movie of the year.
[00:30:54] Drew:
I agree
[00:30:55] Grant:
It could be a huge awards powerhouse. You could see a Return of the King vibe and the Oscars you know kind of talk conversation around Dune: Part 3 if it hits it out of the park. I don't know if it'll do that. But like this has potential to be one of the best movies of the year.
[00:31:19] Drew:
It definitely does
[00:31:20] Grant:
I think we maybe this is where I'm going with my Robert Pattinson MVP conversation from either Primetime or Dune 3. We could see a best actor or best supporting actor nomination or both in here.
[00:31:34] Drew:
Or The Drama.
[00:31:35] Grant:
Or The Drama. He probably won't get that talk around the Odyssey
[00:31:39] Drew:
No, I don't think he will.
[00:31:40] Grant:
because the Odyssey has like too much going on.
[00:31:42] Drew:
And also! They have made a rule where you can now be nominated twice. Or one person can be nominated multiple times.
[00:31:49] Grant:
Yeah. Which is super interesting.
[00:31:50] Drew:
And every comment I've seen have been like Rob Pattinson is now is your time or whatever.
[00:31:54] Grant:
This is like that rule is built for him this year.
[00:31:57] Drew:
Yeah.
[00:31:58] Grant:
I don't know if he'll do it but like I would love to see a supporting actor nod here. I think Scarlett Johansson did that a few years ago. She was best supporting in JoJo Rabbit and then she was nominated for best actress for Marriage Story in the same year. Which is interesting.
[00:32:14] Drew:
I killed it in that movie. Holy moly.
[00:32:15] Grant:
She did and that movie did not get enough love.
[00:32:17] Drew:
That movie is-
[00:32:17] Grant:
That was just a busy year.
[00:32:18] Drew:
Sad.
[00:32:19] Grant:
It is man. Man Noah Baumbach will not win anything ever. It's so sad actually. Okay. That's my five most anticipated.
[00:32:28] Drew:
Yeah
[00:32:29] Grant:
I have one more curveball question for you.
[00:32:30] Drew:
Okay.
[00:32:30] Grant:
What is one movie you are most nervous for this year.
[00:32:36] Drew:
This year... I definitely have mine locked for next year, but not this year. Okay.
[00:32:40] Grant:
It could be nervous, like you think it's going to be bad, or like it just has a lot kind of building up to it and it could fail.
[00:32:47] Drew:
This is intriguing, okay.
[00:32:49] Grant:
I have like two that I am wanting to say here but if you take one of mine I'll take the other.
[00:32:53] Drew:
I mean Doomsday is in there in the conversation of more like my childhood, "Oh, I want the Avengers to be good." I mean all these DC movies I'm not I don't have any expectations for basically any.
[00:33:11] Grant:
Yeah.
[00:33:11] Drew:
I'm like I'm super intrigued about these five and I mean, maybe Clayface?
[00:33:18] Grant:
Okay.
[00:33:19] Drew:
I want the DC to be good
[00:33:21] Grant:
Yeah.
[00:33:21] Drew:
I'm gonna say Clayface, yeah.
[00:33:22] Grant:
Okay. All right. I was going to say Doomsday is one of mine.
[00:33:25] Drew:
Yeah
[00:33:25] Grant:
I'm pretty like concerned for that movie.
[00:33:28] Drew:
Yeah.
[00:33:29] Grant:
Based off what we said about the trailer, but it could be really good. I don't know.
[00:33:33] Drew:
I don't know
[00:33:34] Grant:
I don't know.
[00:33:34] Drew:
That's fair
[00:33:36] Grant:
But the movie I'm most nervous about/concerned about is The Social Reckoning, and I have like a list of reasons I feel like this. We'll start with it's a sequel to one of the best movies in my opinion of the 2010s and
[00:33:49] Drew:
Yeah.
[00:33:50] Grant:
one of the best, kind of, drama modern movies ever made, and it's not returning any of the main cast from that movie, specifically Jesse Eisenberg. Which is like fine because Mark Strong is awesome, but then the topic matter I feel like is it's going to be a big switch up for a lot of people, which is fine but it's really playing on like "we're the sequel to The Social Network," but like
[00:34:17] Drew:
Yeah
[00:34:18] Grant:
it's a it's such a big witch up that I feel like it's going to be a little bit of whiplash compared to the first one
[00:34:24] Drew:
I think that's fair
[00:34:25] Grant:
and then my last concern is Aaron Sorkin is not the greatest director.
[00:34:31] Drew:
That is also true. It feels cash-grabbing.
[00:34:33] Grant:
Like the best of Aaron Sorkin, specifically in writing, it's like the best writing out there, right? It's a killer script. He hasn't been that killer recently, and The Trial of the Chicago 7 was not that good in my opinion. Like it was fine, and so I feel like this is a little bit of like a "I'm going to make a sequel, that's very political, of like the best thing I ever made." And so we'll see how that goes.
[00:35:01] Drew:
In a Rotten Tomatoes sense it could be good. I want it to be good.
[00:35:05] Grant:
I want to be good too. We'll go see it.
[00:35:07] Drew:
100%
[00:35:08] Grant:
Conversation around that movie is going to be very interesting.
[00:35:10] Drew:
But that's definitely a big TBD
[00:35:12] Grant:
That's my most nervous for
[00:35:14] Drew:
Yeah
[00:35:14] Grant:
Movie of the year.
[00:35:16] Drew:
I think that's all valid.
[00:35:17] Grant:
so let's know what you guys think about any of that, any of what we said.
[00:35:23] Drew:
What are your top five movies of the year, and most anticipated movies of the year. And yeah, let us know what you're excited for.
[00:35:31] Grant:
Are we way off the mark? are we to film bro? Are we not film bro we enough? Gosh who knows.
[00:35:35] Drew:
Everyone's saying that 2026 is like the best ever- Actually this is in my opinion, and statistics kind of back it up. But 2026 has been the best year of movies, statistically, ever.
[00:35:46] Grant:
Ever?
[00:35:47] Drew:
This last weekend was the biggest, in history,
[00:35:49] Grant:
Yeah that that is true, this past weekend was crazy.
[00:35:50] Drew:
box office weekend, period.
[00:35:52] Grant:
I don't think this is the best ever but this is by far the best since 2019, and it might be better.
[00:35:57] Drew:
I think it might be better.
[00:35:57] Grant:
2019 was a crazy year.
[00:35:58] Drew:
I think it might be better, and I-
[00:36:01] Grant:
I think there's higher quality films, like you- I don't know Parasite, 1917, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Jojo Rabbit, I mean like you go down the list you're like, "wow there's like so many quality films that year," but this year feels similar.
[00:36:15] Drew:
It does feel similar. I think you have the blockbusters are strong, and the artsy movies - we haven't really seen a ton - but they are looking strong.
[00:36:23] Grant:
But it's going to be a really cool year, awards season is going to be crazy.
[00:36:25] Drew:
I'm so excited for Oscar season dude.
[00:36:27] Grant:
It's going to be insane, so let us know we got what you guys think. Again are we way off the mark? Is there one movie that we didn't mention that we like really should have mentioned? Are we forgetting one crazy movie? So let's know what you guys think.
[00:36:39] Drew:
Yep.
[00:36:40] Grant:
Anything else you want to add?
[00:36:41] Drew:
Nope.
[00:36:40] Grant:
Take a break...
[00:36:41] Drew:
...and enjoy a film.
